Jersey Aikido Kids classes are designed to introduce children to the etiquette and techniques of Aikido.
Unlike many other martail arts, Aikido does not encourage attacing as a means of defence. For example if you were to use punches and kicks to defend yourself this would only act to antagonize an aggressor much like repeatedly poking a wasp nest with a stick! Instead Aikdo teaches how to harmonize with the oncoming energy of an attacker. leading them off balance in order to imobilize them.
The class generally consists of a quick warm up followed by ukemi practice (rolls). This is where the children learn to look after themselves during practice by learning various roles and falls. The children are then shown a series of exercises and techniques which they practice in pairs.
There are many benefits from practicing aikido; these include health and fitness, better confidence, self esteem, awareness and focus.
We feel that it is important that children learn to walk away from an aggressive situation at the first instance and ultimately to avoid such situations in the first place.
