Aikido is a comprehensive and effective martial art which provides a basis for both physical and spiritual development.

Classes begin with stretching, moving and breathing exercises, and since Aikido is based on full and natural body movement, it exercises every limb and joint of the body.
Flexibility, muscle tone, co-ordination and reactions are all developed.

Aikido offers an absorbing way to maintain health and vitality within a framework of aesthetic movement, and regular practice results in a more calm and relaxed mind, and a stronger and more supple body.

Aikido has been referred to as moving meditation.

A centre of calm around which the universe revolves
The techniques of Aikido are designed to diffuse an aggressor’s attack rather than inflict injuries, and the emphasis in practice is on co-operation rather than competition.

Practitioners learn to look after each other and themselves so that throws and locks can be safely practiced.

Because Aikido uses whole-body movements great strength is not required to overcome an aggressive force, and so Aikido is accessible to all regardless of size, strength, age or gender.

Experienced practitioners learn to defend themselves against multiple armed and unarmed attacks.

Many Aikido movements are derived from traditional Japanese sword and staff forms, and weapons training is a part of Aikido.

"You cannot run away from a weakness; you must sometimes fight it out or perish. And if that be so, why not now, and where you stand?"
Robert Louis Stevenson (1859 - 1894)
